A Study of the Relationship between Self-Concept and Environmental Variables in Boy¢¥s High School Students

Abstract
The relationship between self-concept and environmental variables in boys¢¥ high school students has been studied in 235 students from boys¢¥ high school during one month (December, 1988) in Kwangju City.
In this study, Environment divided into home environment including process variable (total family function, peace degree in family) and structure variable (socioeconomic status, family number) and school environment including academic achievement and satisfaction degree in school.
Data were collected by the self-concept scale (Cronbach¢¥s a = .94) and family function scale (Cronbach¢¥s ¥á= .90).
The results were analyzed statistically by frequency, Pearson correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and path analysis to obtain the following findings.
1. Hypothesis 1, stating that there will be significant differences among subscales of self-concept was supported (P < .001).
2. Hypothesis 2, stating that process and structure variable in home environment will have significant causal relationship with total positive self score was supported (P <.01).
3. Hypothesis 3, stating that process and:., structure variable in home environment will have significant causal relationship with physical;= ;self was supported (P < .0 1, P < .05).
4. Hypothesis 4, stating that process and structure variable in home environment will have significant causal relationship with moral ethical self was not supported.
5. Hypothesis 5, stating that process and structure variable in home environment will have significant causal relationship with personal self was supported (P < .01).
6. Hypothesis 6, stating that process and structure variable in home environment will have significant causal relationship with family self was supported (P <.01).
7. Hypo.thesis 7, stating that process and structure variable in home environment will have significant causal relationship with social self was supported (P < .01).
8. Hypothesis 8, stating that process and structure variable in home environment and satisfaction degree in school will have causal relationship with school achievement was supported (P <.05, P<.01).
9. Hypothesis 9, stating that process and structure variable in home environment will have causal relationship with satisfaction degree in school was not supported.
